Abstract
1,204,238. Hydromechanical change-speed gear. J. H. GOOCH. 2 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 22085/68. Addition to 1,013,602. Heading F2D. To provide reverse drive, without the need of additional gearing, in a change-speed gear for road or rail vehicles or ships as set out in the parent Specification 1,013,602 wherein an hydraulic coupling h, or other slip coupling, and a synchronous self-shfiting positive clutch S, which engages automatically when its input speed reaches its output speed, are in parallel power paths between input "I" and output "O" shafts such that the power path including the hydraulic coupling h is capable of driving the output shaft at a greater speed than the clutch S so that the output shaft "O" is driven through the fluid coupling h when the latter is filled and is driven through the clutch S when the coupling h is emptied, the one-way synchronous clutch S of the parent Specification is replaced by a two-way synchronous clutch which may be set to act as a synchronous clutch in one or other direction of rotation whereby the transmission may be operated by a reversible electric motor M for forward or reverse drive. As shown, the motor M drives directly through the hydraulic coupling h and through the clutch S via reduction gearing. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the output "O" is arranged from a separate shaft and a layshaft L interposed in the path between the motor M and the synchronous clutch S.
