Abstract

1,202,802. Petroleum resins. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 June, 1968 [7 July, 1967; 22 Aug., 1967]. No. 27061/68. Heading C3P. Petroleum resins of high softening point are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of resins prepared by thermal polymerization of steamcracked petroleum distillate fraction, preferably having a boiling point between 20‹ and 280‹ C., and comprising cyclodienes and cycloalkenee. Hydrogenation may be effected in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent such as heptane in the presence of a nickel or molybdenum disulphide catalyst. The products may be steam distilled to remove low molecular weight materials and may be used in inks, paints, varnishes, cable coatings and mixed with rubber in adhesives.
