Abstract

1,201,440. Conveying and replacing spools; stranding machines. M. MARTINEZ. 5 March, 1969 [12 March, 1968], No. 11977/68. Headings D1F and D1T. A method of loading and unloading spools, bobbins or reels into and out of pintles -or mountings of a machine, e.g. a stranding machine having a plurality of pintles, comprises the steps of loading spools 14a to be mounted in the pintles 15 on to a conveyor 16, conveying the spools 14a below the pintles and locating each spool in a vertical plane displaced to one side of a vertical plane containing the respective axis of the pintle, lowering any spools 14 from the pintles on to the conveyor 16, operating the conveyor to position each spool 14a in the vertical plane containing the respective axis of the pintle, raising each spool to be loaded into the respective pintle and then operating the conveyor to convey unloaded spools 14 away from the machine. The various steps are preferably carried out in an automatically timed sequence. The spools 14a are raised from the conveyor into the pintles by means of hydraulic or pneumatic rams or jacks 22 which have cradles 23 for engaging the spools. The spools 14 to be unloaded may fall by gravity on to the conveyor or may be lowered by means of the jacks 22. The conveyor 16 comprises two parallel endless chains 17 connected by longitudinally spaced apart rods 18, the jacks operating between the rods when the conveyor is stationary. The pintles may be spring biassed pneumatically or hydraulically operated pintles.
