Abstract

1299424 Magnetic carrier EASTMAN KODAK CO 12 Feb 1970 [17 Feb 1969] 6845/70 Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] A developer composition for use on developing electrostatic charge patterns comprises electroscopic toner mixed with carrier particles which comprise a magnetic core coated with at least two continuous, uniform layers of film-forming electrically-insulating resin, the layers being distinct with substantially no dissolution of one into the other. The developer may consist of 90-99% carrier and 1-10% toner by weight. The cores (e.g. 30-1200 microns dia.) may be of Fe, Co, Ni or alloys thereof, ferrites, Iron dispersed on a resin binder or non-magnetic particles coated with ferromagnetic material. The resins (many specified) may be hardenable by light or heat. The carrier particles may have a resistance greater than 10<SP>12</SP> ohms, a magnetic response of at least 65% of that of the core material, and a bulk density at least 80% of that of the core material. In Examples, a black toner comprising a nigrozine colourant and a styrene-based polymer binder is mixed with carriers consisting of iron or iron oxide particles coated with up to 5 layers of polymers. The developer mix is applied by magnetic brush.
