1298481 Herbicidal compositions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 22 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 19240/70 Heading A5E [Also in Division C2] A herbicidal composition comprises a mixture of a compound of formula III in which X is thiocyano, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms or an alkoxy radical, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms which may be substituted by chlorine, bromine, cyano or thiocyano, R' is an alkynyl radical having 2 to 5 carbon atoms and n denotes 0, 1, 2 or 3 and a compound of formula I in which X is chlorine, bromine, methyl mercapto or methoxy, R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, isobutynyl, methoxyisopropyl, ethoxyisopropyl, γ-methoxypropyl, propoxyisopropyl or the group II or salts thereof, and R<SP>1</SP> is ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl, γ-methoxypropyl, #-methoxyethyl, methoxyisopropyl, ethoxyisopropyl, propoxyisopropyl, methylmercaptoisopropyl, isopentynyl, α,α-bis-(ethyl)- ethyl-α-cyanoisopropyl, cyanomethyl, #-cyanoethyl, α,α-bis-(methyl)- propyl, isobutynyl, #-methylmercapto-ethyl or cyanopropyl, or a compound of formula IV in which X is oxygen or sulphur, R is a C 1 -C 8 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by chlorine, bromine, methoxy or ethoxy groups, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or haloalkyl and R<SP>2</SP> is haloalkyl. The herbicide is useful for controlling unwanted plants both pre- and post-emergence, specially pre-emergence in crops such as potatoes, Indian corn, rice &c. Methods of preparing compounds I and III are described.
