Abstract
1295617 Measuring physical properties, electrically AUTOMATION PRODUCTS Inc 2 July 1971 31032/71 Heading G1N In apparatus for measuring density, viscosity, or material interface or level, of the type in which a paddle 12 on an elongate flexible spring 14 is vibrated in the investigated material and the amplitude or resonant frequency of the vibrations is measured, unwanted effects (due e. g. to temperature changes, corrosion, wear or adhesion of material to the paddle) are compensated by comparing the results of two measurements made with different effective areas of the paddle. In Fig. 1, the paddle 12 has a large effective area 32 and a small effective area 46 and respective electromagnetic vibrators 19, 29 and pick-ups 21, 31. The spring 14 is fixed to a housing (50) at its end 16 remote from the paddle. The housing has an externally screw-threaded tubular portion (52) for fixing to a vessel containing the material. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spring (14a) may be fixed to the housing at a point between the location of the drive and pick-up means and the paddle. In another arrangement Fig. 6 (not shown), only one set of drive and pickup means is provided and the spring and paddle assembly is axially rotatable to obtain the different effective areas of the paddle. The comparison may be the difference of or the ratio of the squares of the resonant frequencies.
