Abstract

1295258 Bearing material AMPEP INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS Ltd 19 April 1971 [1 Dec 1969] 58640/69 Heading F2A [Also in Division D2] A bearing material is composed of a mat of randomly orientated fibres bound by a resin, the mat comprising fibres of low friction material and fibres of high modulus material. The bound resin may be secured to a backing, e.g. of resin impregnated glass fabric by the resin. The low friction fibres are preferably of PTFE and the high modulus fibres are of carbon fibres. The mat may be made by macerating and dispersing in water a mixture of P.T.F.E. yarns and carbon fibres. A water soluble low melting point synthetic resin is added to the aqueous suspension and the slurry deposited on to a metal grid by the application of a vacuum. Excess water is removed and the mat dried. The mat may be laminated to a phenol formaldehyde resin preimpregnated glass fabric and the laminate used to line a metal sleeve to form a bearing bush. The bush is deformed to the required shape and the resin cured to secure the laminate to the bush. The outer surface of the bush may then be machined to the shape of the bearing housing.
