Abstract

1289737 Fused silica articles TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 22 Dec 1969 [26 Feb 1969] 62207/69 Heading C1M Substantially water-free vitreous silica articles are produced by depositing silicon dioxide on or in a former and the resultant deposit sintered in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, helium or a mixture thereof. Sintering is preferably under atmospheric pressure and between 1350‹ and 1600‹ C. The silicon dioxide layer may be deposited by vapour phase hydrolysis of a compound of silicon such as a halide, preferably SiCl 4 . The former is preferably of graphite and shaped with a hemispherical end to a cylindrical body to give a crucible shape.
