Abstract
1289465 Timber substitutes A MORALT 26 Jan 1970 [27 Jan 1969] 3655/70 Addition to 1235124 Heading C3N A moulded wooden body comprises a core and a surface layer, the surface layer comprising pulverulent wood material and asbestos as a first fire-proofing agent and which has impregnated therein a second fire-proofing agent other than asbestos. The second fire-proofing agent may be antimony trioxide, boric acid or boron oxide or a mixture of boric acid with antimony trioxide. The second fire-proofing agent is suitably present in an amount of at least 5% by weight, and preferably present in an amount of at least 10% by weight, based on the total dry weight of the surface layer. The second fireproofing agent may itself have fungicidal properties or the surface layer may include in addition to the first and second fire-proofing agents a fungicide and/or insecticide. The asbestos content is preferably within the range 40-60% by weight, but quantities as low as 8-12% by weight, based on the total dry weight of the surface layer, are also effective. The pulverulent wood material is preferably grinding dust resulting from grinding or sanding of chipboard of the kind having fire-resistant properties. In a preferred embodiment grinding dust resulting from the grinding of the boards according to the invention is raised for the surface layer. One such surface layer comprises a 60 : 40 weight ratio of (i) a material comprising 50% by weight wood chips, 50% by weight asbestos and additionally containing 15% of the second fire-proofing agent in the wood chips and (ii) refined material originating from a moulded body according to the invention. The glue for the pulverulent wood material is preferably urea-formaldehyde resin. The glue may be present in the surface layer in an amount up to 12% by weight and in the core material 10% by weight based on the total dry weight. The moulded bodies may contain asbestos and/or a second fire-proofing agent in the core material thereof and this core material may be the same as that used for the surface layer. The surface layers and core layer may be moulded into a three-layered chipboard and subsequently passed for example at 140 C. for 8 minutes to form a solid body.
