Abstract

1289143 Combustion apparatus; incinerators COMBUSTION POWER CO Inc 2 Sept 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 43439/69 Headings CSG and G10A Particulate fuel is pyrolized in a first zone or chamber 51 of a combined gasifier/combustion assembly E, the combustible gases produced being burnt in a gas turbine combustion chamber 53, whilst the solid residues from the first zone or chamber 51 are passed to a second combustion zone or chamber 52 to be completely combusted with supercharged air bled from a compressor 20, the hot combustion gases produced passing back to the first zone or chamber 51 to effect the pyrolysis. The fuel used may be low grade coal, or refuse W in which case the assembly E forms part of the waste disposal system disclosed in Specification 1289144. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, comminuted refuse from feeder valve 24 is pyrolized in a fluidized sand bed in chamber 51, the fuel gases produced passing through particle separators 36" to the turbine combustors 53. The particulate residue from separators 36" is combusted with the compressor bleed air in lower vortex combustion chamber 52, the hot combustion gases produced both fluidizing the bed and effecting the pyrolysis in chamber 51. Large incombustible matter passes directly from chamber 51 through an apex opening in the gas distribution plate, and a conical throat member to the chamber 52, the incombustible residues from the latter chamber passing to a quench tank. Alternatively Fig. 5, (not shown) a lower combustion supporting fluidized bed below the upper pyrolizing bed may be used in place of the vortex combustion chamber. Dolomite or limestone particles may be added to the pyrolizing bed.
