Abstract

1288683 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 15 Jan 1971 [28 Jan 1970] 4033/70 Heading F2E A disc brake, wherein rotatable friction discs are brought into engagement with opposed radial surfaces in a stationary housing by pressure plates located between the friction discs, comprises at least one non-rotating intermediate disc, the or each disc being positioned between a pair of rotatable friction discs and arranged to transmit torque to the pressure plates when the brake is applied. The disc brake comprises two pressure plates 14, 15, which, when the brake is applied, are mutually moved angularly by a pull-rod and toggle links, and move axially apart by balls 17 in inclined sockets to press against rotatable discs 10, keyed on a rotatable shaft, separated by non-rotatable discs 13. Lugs, protruding internally of the housing abut extensions of the pressure plates 14, 15 so that, depending on the direction of rotation of the shaft, one pressure plate is held stationary whereas the other rotates a small distance to increase pressure on the discs 10. In one embodiment, a floating pin 29, guided in part-circumferential or kidney-shaped recesses 31, 32 in the housing diametrically opposite the pull rod, cooperates with bosses 35 on the non-rotatable discs 13, and with a radial extension 33, 34 on each pressure plate 14, 15, so that the non- rotatable discs move a small arcuate distance in the direction of rotation of the rotatable discs 10 and provide torque for the pressure plate which is not held to increase brake pressure. In another embodiment a radial lug 37 on each non- rotatable disc 13 abuts a radial extension 38 on each pressure plate 14, 15, the radial extensions each axially extending the width of all the discs, so that, again, small angular movement of the discs 13 causes one pressure plate to move to increase braking pressure. In further embodiments, a stop abutment for the pressure plates 14, 15, similar to the housing lugs, is provided diametrically opposite the pull-rod, and the torque is transmitted from the non-rotatable discs 13 by two pins passing through bushes in the discs, each pin abutting a radial extension of one pressure plate, or by two sets of radial lugs of the discs 13 each set abutting a radial extension of one pressure plate extending across the discs.
