Abstract

1287824 Rolling METALLURGIE HOBOKEN-OVERPELT 25 Aug 1970 [25 Aug 1969] 40802/70 Heading B3M In a continuous rolling process for copper bar there are provided means between the stands of a group of roughing stands B to reduce tension in the bar, and the stands of an intermediate group of stands C are arranged so that their passes suppress torsion along the bar. The temperature of the bar is kept constant before it enters the roughing stands by a temperature measuring and controlling device 8, which may heat or cool the bar 800-850‹ C. The copper bar is continuously cast and passes cooling nozzles 2 and pinch rollers 3 driven slower than the bar feed speed. The bar is bevelled by milling cutters 4 and cleaned by metal brushes 5. The speed of the first roughing stand 9 is controlled by a bar supporting device 7. The device comprises a pair of pivoted parts 49, 50 equipped with rollers and biased upwards. The weight of the bar normally holds the parts in the horizontal position but if the supported bar lengthens it permits upward movement of the parts and increase in the speed of the stand 9. The group of roughing stands B includes similar supporting devices 10, 13, 18, 21 so that at least the first two roughing stands are preceded by a supporting device. The devices serve to reduce or eliminate the bar tension in the stand. The roughing stands are alternately horizontal and vertical and may have square, rectangular, oval or round passes. The intermediate group of stands C also comprises alternate horizontal and vertical stands with free loops 23, 26, 28 &c. of bar therebetween. Alternatively the stands may be alternately inclined at 45 degrees. The passes of these stands are all oval or alternately oval and circular to suppress torsions. The free loops are supported on plates when the stands are inclined. The shaped bar is finally cooled in a device 42 to a temperature dependent on the required properties for drawing, e.g. between 700-800‹ C. or between 300-600‹ C. The bar may be descaled, rinsed and coated before being wound. The rolling train is lubricated with oil and housed in a protective atmosphere. Emergency shears 6, 11 &c. are provided along the train to cut the bar if necessary.
