Abstract
1285108 Optical playback of topographical records LICENTIA PATENT-VEKWALTUNGS-GmbH 13 Nov 1970 [15 Nov 1969] 54233/70 Heading G5R A record 2 having signals recorded thereon as surface deformations is played back by means of the reflection or, as shown, refraction of a beam of light or ultra-violet radiation, of which the width, measured in the direction of movement of the record, is less than the shortest wavelength recorded and preferably less than half this wavelength. The signal to be recorded is preferably frequency-modulated or phase-modulated on to a carrier to produce a triangular hill-and-dale waveform on the record 2, Fig. 6 (not shown). The playback beam may be produced by a laser or by an optical system including a slit comprising a glass foil 7 having a refractive index higher than that of the adhesive or glass melt 10 securing it to its mount 9.
