Abstract

1283127 Air heaters DAIMLER-BENZ AG 18 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54879/70 Heading F4S In an air heater comprising a bank 11 of U- tubes 22 connected to a cylindrical header 13 which is subdivided by a partition 17 into inlet and outlet spaces 18 and 20, a housing 12 Surrounding the tubes and header is fixed solely to the ends of the header, thereby permitting relative movement, due to thermal expansion, of the members constituting the air heater to take place without undue stress build up. Hot waste gases from a turbine enter the housing through inlet 27 and leave through outlet 28; air to be heated is passed through the tubes 22. A chamber 16 in which the direction of air flow is reversed is defined by part of the housing and a perforated plate 15 displaceably supported in a rail 14. U-section strips 30 seal the gap 29 between the housing and the header 13. Similar strips 34 are arranged in the chamber 16. A cylindrical elastic member 36 is interposed between the housing 12 and the inlet 19 of the header. A cover 37 closes the housing at the outlet 21 of the header. Screws 40 are used to secure the housing and cover to header flanges 38, 39. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) two opposite banks (41, 42) of U tubes are connected to the single header (44). Instead of tubes, the passages through which the air to be heated flows may be formed by suitably curved and interconnected sheet-metal plates.
