Abstract

1282210 Notching tool CONTINENTAL OIL CO 1 June 1970 [6 Aug 1969] 26238/70 Heading E1F A tool for notching a bore hole 17 comprises an arm 26, supporting cutter 30, and an arm 25 which are pivoted together at 31 and which may both be retracted into housing 10 through notch 12. The arms are pivoted to members 22, 23 which are mounted on threads of opposite hand on rod 13. The rod is manually rotated to cause members 22, 23 to approach one another, thus extending the arms from the housing. The housing is manually rotated to cut the notch. The arms remove material to form a conical portion of the notch having sides 80. Water sprayed from jets 62, 63 flushes away the cuttings. The rod may be rotated by an electric motor, possibly via a clutch. The point of the cutter preferably has an included angle of approximately 30‹. After the notch is formed and the tool removed the formation surrounding the hole is fractured, the fracture extending horizontally from the notch.
