Abstract

1281748 Photo-electric detection of fluorescence IMPULSPHYSIK GmbH 28 Aug 1969 42828/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division C4] Apparatus for detecting the presence and/or quantity of a fluorescing substance in a particular volume in water comprises a pulsed discharge tube 1, producing regular flashes, which are directed, via a filter 5 which includes passage of light of the fluorescence wavelengths, comprising water, and a detecting arrangement, comprising a lens 10, a filter 11 to pass the fluorescence wavelengths and a photo-multiplier 12 (or photodiode), detecting fluorescence in the irradiated volume. The whole apparatus together with associated circuitry and recording apparatus, is contained in a pressurized casing 20, which may be immersed in the sea for long periods, or towed behind a ship. The detector circuit comprises amplifiers 15, 16, an amplitude discriminator, if required, and a tape recorder. This records the time which elapses (from clock 19), depth information and the fluorescence intensities obtained. The source or detector circuitry are powered by long-life battery 21 and the source energized by means of capacitor 2. Typical applications are measuring the flow-rate in e.g. a river by fluorescence measurements after e.g. rhodamine, has been added to the flow, or measurement of plant life growth by use of the fluorescence properties of chlorophyl in phytoplankton.
