Abstract

1276775 Thermal regenerators FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Sept 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 44824/70 Heading F4K In a stationary seal assembly for a rotary regenerator incorporated in a gas turbine engine housing 10 and including peripheral and cross-arm seals located between the core and the housing, each seal comprises a shoe, e.g. 44 one surface of which engages the core 42 the other surface 50 of which has a pair of longitudinal angled slots 52 adapted to loosely receive the longitudinal edges of an arcuate metal leaf spring, e.g. 53. As shown, the seals on one side of the core comprise two C-shaped shoes 44, 46 and springs 53, 54 and a straight cross-arm shoe 48 and spring 55. A D-shaped seal surrounds part of the other side of the core; in this case the metal spring 56 is folded back against itself to form a projecting end 58 which bears against a cap 30 closing the end of the housing 10. In operation cool compressed air entering through passage 16 passes through the core and is heated by hot gases from the engine, see arrow 64. Cool air can be admitted into the space 70 between the spring and the shoe for cooling purposes through small holes, e.g. 72.
