Abstract

1275412 Tyre bead-cores DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 4 Aug 1969 [3 Aug 1968] 37148/68 Heading B7C [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A method for the manufacture of a reinforcing yarn or cord comprises impregnating a bundle or bundles of brittle filaments with a liquid which can be converted into an elastic solid having a Poisson's ratio of at least 0À45 at tensile strains not greater than 5%, twisting the bundle or bundles and converting the liquid into the elastic solid, the brittle filaments being filaments which have a specific modulus of at least 200 Î 10<SP>6</SP> inches. Examples of such brittle filaments are carbon, boron and graphite. The liquid may be convertible by cooling or chemical cross-linking. The liquid may be converted into the elastic solid before or after the twisting of the bundle or bundles of filaments. In a preferred embodiment, the liquid is a resorcinolformaldehyde-latex adhesive composition. The liquid may alternatively be a solution of a polymer in an organic solvent, e.g. cis-polyisoprene in n-hexane containing dicumyl peroxide; the liquid may be a liquid polyurethane. The amount of twist inserted into the yarn or cord is such that the mean helix angle of the filaments with respect to the yarn axis or of the cord is not greater than 20 degrees. In the reinforcing yarn or cord, each filament is sheathed with the elastic solid. The yarn may be used as the bead-core for a penumatie tyre casing, several turns of yarn being embedded in rubber such that the cross-section of the assembly is approximately square or rectangular.
