Abstract

1,272,585. Removing heat from liquid exothermic catalylic reaction. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 7 July, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 32615/68. Headings B1F and B1X. [Also in Division C2] Heat is removed from a liquid exothermic catalylic reactive by letting the liquid boil in zone I thus dispersing the solid catalyst and increasing the amount of reaction, and then passing the liquid through zone II which has non dispersed catalyst and in which the liquid does not boil. The liquid may be a mixture of a tertiary mono-olefin having four to seven carbon atoms per molecule and a primary alcohol having one to six carbon atoms per molecule and the catalyst may be a solid etherification catalyst. The olefin may be isobutene or isocumylene and the alcohol methyl alcohol. The catalyst may be a styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer containing SO 3 H groups or nickel or platinum on silica or alumina.
