Abstract

1,271,627. Filling tubes with particulate solids. FYENS SAEKKEKOMPAGNI A.S. 3 Dec., 1970 [3 Dec., 1969], No. 57421/70. Heading B8C. A tube or hose is filled with a particulate solid, e.g. sand, by causing a liquid carrier medium, e.g. water, to pass through the tubular hose by means of a pressure source, introducing the particulate solid into the carrier medium downstream of the source of pressure, and regulating the rate of flow of the carrier medium so that as the area available for the flow of the carrier medium and the tube or hose is reduced due to the sedimentation of the particulate solid and the tube or hose, then the rate of flow is maintained within the range in which sedimen- . tation takes place. As shown, a tube or hose 1 which may be made of a flexible porous material or of a material impervious to water, is placed on a support, e.g. the sea bed, and water is pumped through a pipe 6 into the tube or hose by a pump P until a predetermined pressure is established by regulation of a discharge opening 3. Sand is then fed from a tank 8 into the pipe 6 and as sedimentation takes place the water flow through the tube or hose is regulated by a valve in a pipe 6<SP>1</SP>. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pump P is replaced by a pressurized water tank (13) and the pipe 6 is additionally connected. to the tank 8 by a. valvecontrolled by-pass pipe (9). In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tank 8.is connected to the tube or hose through an additional connection (5), the tank 8 also being connected to the water supply whereby the sand is carried by water directly, into the tube or hose. The pipes 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and 9 are as in the Fig. 2 arrangement. The filled tube or hose may be used for coast protection purposes.
