Abstract

The crown of a pair of work rolls in a roll stand is determined by plotting a calibration curve for the stand, the curve being derived from a number of flexure curves each corresponding to the substitution of a pair of rolls of known crown in the stand or in an identical stand. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical flexure curve drawn for rolls having a known degree of crown, the curve being obtained by pressing together the rolls under different pressures P. The section of the curve between P o and P m (which may represent 50 and 500 tons respectively) is mainly dependent on roll crown and is approximately parabolic. This section can be expressed by P=p 1 S +p 2 S<SP>2</SP>, where p 1 and p 2 are coefficients and S is the variation in screwdown position from that existing at pressure P o . The value of p 1 for each flexure curve can then be determined, and these values plotted against roll crown to provide the desired calibration curve. The calibration curve can be used to determine the crown of a pair of work rolls whose crown is not known by finding a value of p 1 for the rolls from an appropriate flexure curve and reading off the value of crown against this value of p 1 on the calibration curve.
