In a horizontally sliding door or window of the kind in which two or more sashes are flush in the closed window, one of the sashes moving transversely (i.e. perpendicular to its plane) and then sliding laterally (i.e. in its plane) to open the window comprises running mechanism consisting of two pairs of rollers, i.e. one pair at each side, the rollers 12, 15 of each pair being mounted in a roller frame 17 perpendicularly to one another, the rollers 12 running on a flat surface 20, on the sill member 19 until the flange 13 of the roller 15 abutts against a guiding rib 18, the roller 12 passing through a gap in the rib 18, the fork 16 mounting the roller 15 pivoting about its pivot pin 14 into the vertical to be held by the weight of the leaf 1 creating a torque about the pin 14, and the fork being held vertical by a shoulder stop 22 abutting the roller frame 17; whereupon lock bolt is released in the upper part of the leaf to engage in an upper guide channel and the leaf is guided by the channel and by the rib 18 in its lateral movement. In the closed position the lock bolt at one side only may be withdrawn and the leaf rotated about the other to provide a ventilation gap in the window.
