Abstract

1,263,635. Vehicle spring suspensions; aircraft tractors. UNIT RIG & EQUIPMENT CO. 16 Feb., 1970 [17 July, 1969], No. 7261/70. Headings B7D and B7H. [Also in Division F2] A vehicle includes a support for a groundwheel 22, the support being pivoted to the vehicle frame about a horizontal axis 34 for angular movement thereabout against a shock absorber, the support having a vertical axis for steering of the wheel and mounting a motor for driving the wheel. As shown, an aircraft tractor has wheels 22 independently mounted in wells 20. Each wheel is suspended by a wheel mounting comprising a yoke 24 pivoted about a longitudinal shaft 34 and sprung from the vehicle frame by rubber pads 48, 52 acting between a plate 42 on the yoke, the well wall 50 and a flange 54 retained on shaft 46. The yoke has arms 26, 28 receiving aligned king pin members 66, 68 mounted in a flange 63 of wheel hub 64. The king pin defines a vertical axis, allowing steerage of the wheel. A wheel motor 90 is mounted between the arms of the yoke 24; its drive shaft extends to gearing in a chamber 92 in the wheel hub by way of a universal joint. The wheel comprises a permanent hub 64 and sleeve 84 and the rim comprises a brake drum portion 80 secured to the usual rim 82. The flange 63 locates a brake mechanism 78 of the expanding tube type in which the rim 80 is retarded when the brake mechanism is actuated.
