Abstract

[Also in Divisions D1, F2, G3 and H3] An apparatus for controlling the tension in elongated flexible material 6 as it is being drawn from a supply drum 2 or over a capstan and lapped around a core, comprises an electromagnetically operated friction brake 13 acting on the drum or capstan, a high gain D.C. amplifier capable of supplying the whole of the electrical power for operating the brake and having in its input circuit a variable impedance 12 the value of which is varied in accordance with the position of the sensing device 5 which moves in accordance with changes in tension in the flexible material against a substantially constant biasing force 9, and means for stabilizing the system to prevent hunting. The sensing device 5 may be a dancer roller. The substantially constant biasing force may be by pneumatic means or spring means. The high gain D.C. amplifier may be a multi-stage transistor amplifier with an overall feedback circuit. A preferred construction of the electromagnetic brake is described but not illustrated.
