Abstract

1,261,667. Air intakes for jet engines. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM G.m.b.H. Aug. 17, 1970 [Sept. 2, 1969], No.39621/70. Heading F1G. An air intake duct 1 for a jet propulsion engine is provided with a double-walled auxiliary intake door 4 which opens into the duct. The door comprises an inner door 5 which is pivotally mounted at 6 to the wall of the intake duct and which in its closed position conforms to the inner contour of the duct, and an outer door 8 which is pivotally mounted at 9 to the inner door and which in its closed position conforms to the outer contour of the wall of the intake duct. The inner door 5 is formed with perforations 11 and a tension spring 10 is connected between the two doors. In Fig. 1 the auxiliary intake is closed by the inner and outer doors, this being the position when the aircraft in which the engine is mounted is moving above a certain minimum speed, the pressure within the intake duct being communicated through the apertures 11 to the space between the doors and so acting to close the outer door. When the engine is stopped and the aircraft is stationary no differential pressure exists and the outer door abuts against the inner door due to the action of the tension spring 10 but the inner door remains in the closed position against the abutment 12 due to the action of the tension spring 7. When the engine is running and the aircraft is stationary the inner door 5 pivots inwardly due to the suction pressure in the intake duct and the outer door 8 remains in contact with the inner door due to action of the tension spring 10, and air-flows in through the auxiliary intake as shown.
