Abstract

1,258,042. Variable speed gears. R. KNOWLES. 3 Jan., 1969 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 46212/67. Heading F2D. A transmission comprising two gear-boxes 18, 52 in series (e.g. one 18 nearer the input 2 providing three overdrive ratios and direct drive and the other 52 providing direct drive and three step-down ratios) is controlled by a single lever (e.g. so that when gears of either gear-box are transmitting load, those of the other gear-box are unloaded). The ratios are provided by five shift forks, the first moving a gear into mesh with gears 80 and 74 for reverse ratio, a second moving gears 80 and 74 into mesh for first ratio and moving the gear 80 to clutch a gear 78 to the output shaft 54 for second ratio, a third 100 sliding a sleeve 60 to clutch to the shaft 54 a gear 76 for third ratio and a shaft 16 for fourth ratio (direct drive), a fourth 44 clutching to the shaft 16 the input 2 for direct drive and a gear 20 for fifth ratio, and the fifth 46 clutching to the shaft 16 gears 22 and 24 for sixth and seventh ratios.
