Abstract
1,256,706. Gas electrodes. DURHAM CHEMICALS Ltd. and ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 24 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No 19739/68. Heading H1B. An electrode for an electric cell which comprises a layer of foraminous hydrophobic material and an adjacent layer of catalytic material is characterized in that either (a) the gas-diffusion through the hydrophobic layer is such that the limiting current of the electrode is less than 50% of the maximum which could have been achieved from the catalytic material or (b) the permeability of the hydrophobic layer is 0À1 x 10<SP>-6</SP> to 9À0 x 10<SP>-6</SP> cc./sec./cm.<SP>2</SP>/mm. H 2 O. The hydrophobic layer may be P.T.F.E. tape which is compressed to reduce its permeability and optionally impregnated with polystyrene or poly(butyl methacrylate). The electrode may be used in a fuel cell or a battery of metal/oxygen or metal/air cells.
