Abstract

1,255,943. Vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 8690/68. Heading H1N. The fixed contact 16 of a vacuum switch is suspended from a thermally conducting cylindrical part 11 of the easing 10 by thick metal, e.g. copper struts 17 so that it may be effectively cooled. The cylindrical part may have radial fins and may be force cooled by a fan. The contact 16 is annular and a conducting actuating rod 19 carrying a movable disc contact 18 passes through its centre. The rod 19 is supported in deformable bellows 20 at each end so that the vacuum switch may be mounted in series with vacuum switches at both ends or may be actuated from either end. In operation, an arc is initially drawn between the abutting surfaces of disc contact 18 and ring contact 16 before being transferred to the contact 16 and rod 19. The arcing portion of rod 19 and contacts 16 and 18 are treated with arc-resistant material. The arc may be rotated by an axial magnetic field produced by a coil wound on the metal part 11 and electrically connected thereto. Several pairs of contacts may be provided in each switch (Figs. 3 and 5, not shown), to provide parallel current interrupting paths. All the fixed contacts may be suspended from the same conducting casing part, or they may be suspended from individual mutually insulated casing parts, the moving contacts all being mounted on the same actuating rod. The part or parts of the casing from which the fixed contacts are suspended may be protected by ceramic shields. To ensure even loading on the parallel contact pairs during interruption an inductance may be provided in each parallel path.
