Abstract

1,254,826. Polyester filaments. FIBER INDUSTRIES, Inc. 12 March, 1970 [12 March, 1969; 17 Nov., 1969], No. 11840/70. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C3, D1 and G1] Fibres of polytetramethylene terephthalate or polytrimethylene terephthalate are produced from a melt by extrusion through an annular pack containing 96 holes each having a diameter of 0À018", the extrusion being conducted at a rate of 34À3 lb./hour, maintaining a pack outlet temperature of 260‹ C. The extrudate is subjected to an outflow quench at a flow rate of 80 cubic ft./min. The filaments are wound up at 2000 ft./min. having a resultant spun denier/filament of 40 (Examples 1 and 5). 'Blends of polyethylene terephthalate and poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate) or poly(1,3- propylene terephthalate) are extruded as in Examples 1 and 5, but using an outlet temperature of 275‹ C. (Examples 8 and 9). In Example 1 the yarn is drawn in a ratio of 3À2, finished, crimped in a stuffing box and then heat set at 150‹ C. for 18 minutes.
