Abstract
1,253,684. Knitting. BENTLEY ENG. CO. Ltd. 16 Oct., 1968 [27 Oct., 1967], No. 4374/69. Headings D1C and D1K. The toe of a stocking is closed by constricting the end of a circularly knitted tube and retaining it in a constricted condition by a binding yarn anchored at its ends and wound round the fabric. The stocking is knitted in either direction and the toe is formed as a turned welt construction by retaining loops as welt hooks or on alternative needles of a two bed machine whilst knitting continues on the remaining needles. Prior to transference of the original course of held loops back to the needles the diol is raised or the beds separated sufficiently to enable a yarn to be fed from a guide and caused to be wrapped round the central portion of the turned toe so as to constrict the fabric and close the tube. Subsequently the loops are transferred and knitting continues on all the needles in one bed. The ends of the yarn wrapped round the tube are knitted in before and after the wrapping operation. The wrapping yarn may be of a material capable of being melted to fix the closure of the tube during boarding. To assist in operating the welt diol the main diol shaft and head is surmounted by a cam capable of raising and lowering the diol into three positions in which it co-operates with the needles, retains the transferred loops during production of the toe and finally raises the diol to enable the yarn to be fed to the fabric extending between the welt hooks and needles. To assist in closure of the tube a pivoted arm is operated to impinge on the tube and deflect it inwardly as it rotates prior to the yarn being wrapped about it.
