Abstract
1,252,732. Optical waveguides. POST OFFICE. Nov.7, 1968 [Nov.8, 1967], No.50920/67. Heading G2J. [Also in Division C1] A device for launching light into an optical waveguide, at a frequency to allow propagation of the HE 11 made only, consists of a capillary tube into which is inserted a glass rod of slightly smaller diameter, the tube being heated along its middle and drawn out by pulling at each end of the tube until the external diameter of the composite rod is slightly smaller than the original capillary bore, breaking off the taper and introducing this rod into a further capillary and extruding this in the same manner, and repeating the process until the external diameter is about 1/10 th of the original bore diameter, the waveguide so formed having a maximum diameter of 50 times that of the free space wavelength of the light, a minimum diameter approximately equal to such wavelength and a length about 5 x 10<SP>4</SP> times the free space wavelength. The cladding 2 and core 1 of the finished waveguide launching device taper at a constant rate from the largest end whose face 4 is polished, to the smallest end-face 5 which is connected to the guide into which the light is to be launched.
