Abstract

1,252,006. Battery charging circuits. N.V. TOOLS Ltd. 12 Feb., 1969 [13 March, 1968], No. 12255/68. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A battery charging circuit only delivers an appreciable charging current when the voltage across its output terminals is greater than a first non-zero value below the completely discharged battery voltage, and less than a value below the fully charged voltage of the battery. The charging current in a part of this range is substantially constant. As shown in Fig. 2, the battery B is connected in series with a first transistor TR1, the base of which is supplied from a second transistor TR2 only when the battery voltage is sufficient to break down a Zener diode ZD2. This arrangement prevents current flow if the output terminals of the circuit are shorted together. Initially, a further Zener diode ZD1 will be blocked, and the current will rise rapidly as the battery is charged until a voltage is reached at which the Zener diode ZD1 breaks down. The charging current will now remain substantially constant with increasing voltage until the fully-charged voltage is almost reached, whereupon the current will rapidly decrease owing to the emitter potential of transistor TR2 approaching the base potential of the same transistor and thus reducing the drive to transistor TR1. A diode D1 prevents any current flow if the battery is connected the wrong way round.
