Abstract
1,249,853. Sewing implements. R. R. TAYLOR. 28 Oct., 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 35584/ 67. Heading D1G. [Also in Division A5] In a surgeon's stitching implement, an elongated hollow body 1 has a main bore containing a hollow piston 13 having an extension 12 of reduced diameter received in a reduced bore 11 of body 1. The bore in piston 13, which has a larger diameter than extension 12, receives a piston 16. Body 1 is closed adjacent extension 12 by a member 9 journalling a body 4 which is rigid with a handle (not shown) and contains air supply and exhaust pipes 2 and 3 is associated with a valve 5 from which projects a tube 15 slidable in a passage 14 extending axially through extension 12, the arrangement being such that relative rotation between bodies 1 and 4 in opposite directions serves to pressurise and exhaust the space between extension 12 and piston 16, while the space in front of extension 12 is permanently pressurised. The opposite end of body 1 is closed by a member 6 slidably receiving tubular rods 7 and 8 formed at their inner ends with blocks 7B, 8B. A rod 7A slidable within rod 7, is rigid with an extension 13A of piston 13 and a compression spring 7C is interposed between block 7B and extension 13A. A rod 8A, slidable in rod 8, is rigid with a block 18 slidable on extension 13A and block 18 is connected by a rod 17 with piston 16. A compression spring 19 is interposed between extension 13A and piston 16. The outer end of each rod 7 and 8 is cut away as at 20, is provided with a pivot pin 22, and is formed with a flat surface 26 radial to pin 22. The outer end of each rod 7A and 8A is formed with a goosenecked portion 24 and is provided with a pivot pin 25. A movable jaw member 23 is pivotably mounted on pins 22 and 25, the arrangement being such that when the rods 7A, 8A, move outward, member 23 pivots counterclockwise on pin 22 to engage a flat surface formed thereon with surface 26, whereby a surgical needle is gripped in a notch 27 formed in said flat movable surface. In use body 1 is turned relative to body 4 for pressurising extension 12 only, whereby piston 16 moves leftwards till block 7B engages member 6. Further movement serves to compress spring 7C and to clamp a movable needle to rod 7. Body 1 is then rotated about its axis to pass the needle point through the work. Relative movement between bodies 1 and 4 then applies pressure to piston 16, whereby piston 16 moves leftwards to compress spring 19 and block 8B engages member 6 and spring 8C is compressed during closure of the jaw associated with rods 8, 8A upon the pointed end of the needle. Piston 13 will then move rightwards due to differential pressure acting thereon, further compressing spring 19. During initial movement when spring 7C is released the jaw associated with rods 7, 7A releases the butt end of the needle, rod 7 then being retracted. Body 1 is then again turned about its axis to pass the remainder of the needle through the work.
