Abstract

124,717. Mayer, C. W. March 27, 1918, [Convention date]. Feeding and registering webs; collapsible rollers.-In a machine for waxing, carbonizing, coating or impregnating paper or like fabric, the paper is unwound from a supply roll a journaled on a carrier 2, which is supported by rollers 3 on a base 4 adjustable on the frame 5 by means of a rack and pinion 6, the carrier 2 being held yieldingly by a spring 7 to allow for any irregularity of the winding of the paper on the supply roll and to keep it under uniform tension. The paper passes over an ironing edge of a square bar 9 detachably set at the top of a rigid support 10, against the flat face 11 of which the paper is smoothed laterally from the centre outwards by oppositely driven endless brushes 14, 15, Fig. 2. After coating, the paper is wound on a frictionally-driven roller 54 of adjustable diameter, made up of a series of bars 62 between two end disks 59, see Fig. 7, the bars having beveled portions 63 engaged by expanding rings 64 moved in and out by nuts 65 on threaded portions 66 of a bar 67 mounted within the hollow shaft 68.
