Abstract
1,246,447. Coating with titania. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 16 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43678/67. Heading C1N. [Also in Division C7] An oxide-coated electrode for use in electrolytic processes (such as the chlor alkali electrolysis of brine or the production of chlorate, chlorite or hypochlorite) is made by taking an electrically conductive base of which at least the surface is formed of either a film forming metal selected from Ti, Ta, Nb and Zr or a film forming alloy based upon one of these metals, treating the base with an acid containing ions of the film-forming metal, adding to the acid a source of ions of at least one metal other than the film-forming metal or any of the alloy constituents and precipitating upon the base a mixture of oxides of said film-forming metal and of said at least one other metal. The base may comprise a conductive core, e.g. of Cu, which is coated with the film-forming metal or alloy. A suitable alloy is Ti-0À15 weight per cent Pd. An electrode of Ti coated with oxides of Ti and Fe may be made by treating Ti in boiling H 2 SO 4 to produce Ti ions, adding FeCl 3 to the acid and precipitating the oxides from the acid on to the Ti either by applying a current with the Ti as anode or by oxidizing the Ti and Fe ions with (i) KClO 3 , (ii) Pd added as a soluble salt or (iii) air bubbled through the acid.
