Abstract
1,245,799. Cooling metal shafts. I. WEWER. Nov. 19, 1968 [Nov.27, 1967; May 11, 1968], No. 54829/68. Heading C7N. [Also in Division B3] A shaft tempering and straightening machine comprises a container 100 for a tempering medium, rotatable carrier 201 of triangular section in said container with three surfaces mounted in two bearings, 285, 275 on each of which surface a pedestal 202 is mounted, the pedestals carrying two driven centres 301 to receive a shaft to be tempered and straightened, there being a straightening unit for acting on each shaft held between each of the two opposite spaced-apart centres. Each straightening unit comprises three rolls 415, 416 and 417 the upper roller 417 being connected via linkage 422, 424 to a hydraulic cylinder 408 controlled by an electro-magnetic valve and the straightening units not in operation are separated from the control system by hydraulic quick release couplings. The container has a protective hood 102 with a fume extraction pipe 103. The method consists in the heated shaft being first straightened and then rotated by the carrier into the tempering medium so that any stresses are balanced and relieved the straightening operations being concluded by retracting the lever rollers 415, 416 or the centres 301.
