Abstract

Alumina and potassium phosphate are produced from aluminium phosphate ore by treating the ore with a solution of potassium hydroxide at an elevated temperature (e.g. 80- 160‹ C.) to produce a slurry; separating the slurry (e.g. by coagulation or filtration) into solid and liquid phases; separating aluminium hydroxide and potassium phosphate from the liquid phase; and calcining the aluminium hydroxide to produce alumina. The liquid phase from the slurry contains potassium phosphate and potassium aluminate; the aluminate may be crystallized selectively, or jointly with the phosphate, which crystals are then dissolved in water and the resulting solution decomposed with alkali to produce a slurry which is separated and condensed to isolate aluminium hydroxide, any potassium phosphate then being crystallized from the mother liquor. Part of the potassium hydroxide may be replaced by sodium hydroxide which should be used in an amount representing 20-30 mol. per cent of the total/ alkali, and the molar ratio of alkali in solution to aluminium oxide in the ore may be 1À3-8:1.
