Abstract

1,242,156. Latch fastenings. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. 20 Nov., 1969 [20 Nov.,- 1968], No. 56884/69. Heading E2A. A door latch mechanism comprises a spindle 3 which is supported for rotation in a bearing bush 2 mounted on a mounting plate 1 and which is intended to be at right angles to an edge surface of the door, one end of the spindle being fixed to a rotary latch bolt 4, the other end being fixed to a ratchet wheel 5, a pawl 6 rotatable about a pin 7 parallel to the spindle, a tension spring 8 which at one end portion engages the ratchet wheel and the other end portion on the pawl, so that the ratchet wheel and pawl are urged in mutually opposed directions, external and internal operating mechanism (not shown) for bringing the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet wheel, a locking lever 11 for preventing the operation of the pawl, the locking lever being actuatable at one end by a cylinder lock mechanism (not shown) and at the other end by an internal locking knob (not shown), and a two limbed spring 16 having the free end portion of one limb pivoted in a hole in the ratchet wheel and the free end portion of the other limb in an opening 17 which permits limited free movement in the locking lever, the arrangement being such that when the latch mechanism is incorporated into a door, locking lever is set in its locking position with the door open, it is moved out of its locking position on closing the door by means of the two limbed spring which transmits torque from the ratchet wheel to the locking lever, whereas when the locking lever is set in the locking position with the door open it remains in its locking position on closing the door if at the same time the external operating mechanism is operated. In the construction shown the pawl is operated by the external operating mechanism via a release lever 9 which is also pivoted upon the pin 7 and the locking lever has a tang 18; if the release lever 9 is rotated by operating the external release mechanism the tang 18 of the locking lever engages a portion of the release lever and is prevented from being moved to its unlocking position.
