Abstract

1,138,172. Adjustable seats. EVERTAUT Ltd. 16 Aug., 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 21857/66. Heading A4J. A telescopic seat supporting strut is adjustable in length, by lowering plunger 15, to draw the elements 23 of split collet assembly downwardly, off taper plug 14 and thus, inwardly, to disengage the ridges 26 from the grooves 28, so that tube 11 is free to move longitudinally. The elements 23 are keyed for radial movement in a diametral groove (21, Fig. 3, not shown) in carrier 20. Spring 29 is effective to lift the tube 11, when the seat is unoccupied. When the seat is occupied, tube 11 transmits a downward force, which wedges the elements 23 laterally and, on actuation of the plunger 15, the stem 38 slides through the carrier 20 without moving it. This action compresses spring 37 whose rating is chosen, so that it is only slightly compressed to move the carrier 20, when the seat is unoccupied. Compression spring 18 returns plunger 15 in the upward direction.
