Abstract

1,137,974. Rotary filter, centrifugal separator. ARTHUR D. LITTLE, Inc. 7 April, 1966, No. 15750/66. Headings B1D, BIT and B2P. An inward-flow rotary filter drum 25 carries a pair of vertical baffles 50 which maintain fluid in the annular space around the drum in rotation therewith, and the drum is rotated at a speed which either prevents solid particles landing thereon, for normal filtration, or allows particles below a certain size to land or pass through, for solid particle classifying. A similar technique may be used to establish a layer of filter aid, or separated solids acting as filter aid, on the drum, which layer is periodically removed or disturbed by varying the speed. In Fig. 1, slurry enters the housing at 22, filtrate is withdrawn through hollow, rotary shaft 44 and solids or rejected slurry accumulate in a non-turbulent zone, defined by baffles 65, 66, and are removed through a valve (not shown). In Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), also for liquid filtering, a rotary, scroll-like scraper (88) directs solids across the flat floor of the housing, through holes (98) into chamber (83), whose outlet valve (104) is controlled by a timer and differential pressure switch, which detects the rising level of material in chamber (83). The scraper and chamber may be periodically washed out by liquid from inlet (95). In Fig. 8 (not shown) a gas filter incorporates a scraper (88) and continuously rotating dust-outlet valve (122). The drum 25 has a layer (26) of filtering fabric supported between two foraminous screens (27, 28) on a perforate support 29.
