Abstract
1,137,576. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Nov., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 53158/66. Heading C4S. A composition consisting of (a) yttrium oxide used in the manufacture of yttrium vanadate: europium phosphors, or (b) a phosphor having the general formula Y 1-x Eu x YO 4 wherein x is from 0.01 to 0-2, is characterized in that said composition (a) or (b) contains Tb in the range from a small amount effect to improve the luminescent characteristics of (b) or the phosphors produced from (a), to up to 500 moles per million moles of the yttrium content of (a) or yttrium plus europium content of (b), e.g. at least 5 or 100 to 150 within the range 35 to 150 moles per million. The natural Tb level of Y 2 O 3 may be reduced by blending with low Tb content Y 2 O 3 and raised by mixing with Tb 4 O 7 dissolved in HNO 3 . In a preferred preparation Y 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 and Tb 4 O 7 dissolved in HNO 3 are precipitated as oxalate with oxalic acid, fired to (YEuTb) 2 0 3 , Y 2 0 5 is added in amount 1 to 4 (e.g. 1.9) moles per mole of (YEuTb) 2 O 3 and refired; firing temperatures range from 700‹ to 1100‹ C. for 30 to 60 mins. Application to colour T.V. is instanced.
