Abstract
1,132,139. Sewing machines. G. HODKINSON. 17 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966]; No. 48851/66. Heading DIG. A sewing machine comprises a drive shaft and a driven member connected to the drive shaft so as to be capable of overrunning the drive shaft, the driven member being arranged to drive the machine and also being mechanically connected to a pedal, whereby the machine may be turned by movement of the pedal when the drive shaft is stationary. A motor 10 is coupled by a friction clutch to a drive shaft (19) which is in turn coupled by a freewheel (20) to a driven member in the form of a pulley 21. The latter has a first groove 21b coupled by a belt 24 to the sewing machine, and a second groove 21a receiving a belt 25 one end of which is connected to a lever 28 and the other end of which is connected to a tension spring 26. Lever 28 is connected by a rod 34 to a treadle. A lever 13 is connected by a rod 12 to a treadle, and by a rod 14 to one arm 15 of a double-armed lever rigid with a spindle 16 screwed into the motor housing. The other arm 15a is connected by a tension spring 17 to a lever arm 18 rigid with a similar spindle 16. On actuation of lever 13 via rod 12, the spindles 16 screw into the motor housing for interengaging the clutch elements to rotate pulley 21 for driving the sewing machine. After release of lever 13 to stop the machine, lever 28 may be actuated via rod 34 to rotate pulley 21 sufficiently to locate the needle in a desired position.
