Abstract
1,131,234. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Sept., 1965 [30 Sept., 1964], No. 40979/65. Heading H1D. An electrode for a high-pressure mercury vapour halogen discharge lamp includes a metal outer part which is in electrically and thermally conducting relationship with a current supply wire, which surrounds a space at least half of which is occupied by an emitter body, and which has an opening at the side remote from the current supply wire so that the end of the discharge can rest on the emitter body during the starting condition, the emitter body being connected to the current supply wire by a path which includes the metal outer part and which has a thermal resistance such that during the cooling period following the extinction of the lamp the emitter body remains at a higher temperature than the metal outer part, whereby condensation of halogenide upon the emitter surface is prevented. The emitter body 14, Fig. 2, which preferably includes an immersed tungsten helix 13, is supported within an outer tungsten helix 11 with which it makes poor thermal contact, the outer helix being connected to the current supply wire 10. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the turns of the outer helix do not contact the emitter body, but the free end portion of the helix wire is bent back along the helix axis, and supports the emitter body, thermal conduction to the current lead being reduced by the length of the therma path.
