Abstract

1,130,953. Portable lathes; lapping. J. D. HOTCHKISS. 20 March, 1967, No. 12675/66. Headings B3B, B3C, B3D and B3T: A portable machine tool for turning or alternatively lapping a shaft in situ and which is adapted to be assembled on a shaft not having free ends, comprises a body member 10 carrying half bearings (not shown)- at each end, two further half bearings, e.g. 14 which can be adjustably secured to the body member in position on the shaft to provide a running fit for rotation,of the lathe relative to the shaft, two end caps 11, 12 which can be secured to the body member and which serve for clamping the further half bearings thereto and means for mounting a tool slide assembly. For facing or counterboring the end of a shaft the tool slide assembly 32 is mounted, as shown, Fig. 6, on an end plate 17 of the body member. 10 but for turning a cylindrical surface the assembly 32 is adjustably mounted by T- headed bolts 35 on a platform 20 extending longitudinally of the body member. A V-belt drive to matching grooves 24, 30 in the end caps 11, 12 and body member rotates the lathe around the shaft and an abutment member is located so that, once in each revolution it contacts a capstan 43 on the tool slide assembly which through gears 42 and feed screw 41 feeds the tool mounting 38 incrementally. A tumbler, not shown, reverses the direction of feed at the end of each traverse. Collars, not shown, located on the shaft externally to or internally of the end plates 17, (16) prevent endwise displacement of the lathe. Where the shaft axis is not true or its surface is irregular separate half bearings may be mounted thereon first and adjusted to the desired axis and the lathe then set up: on these bearings. The lathe may be driven by a shaft (Fig. 10, not shown). For lapping a shaft a spring-tensioned bracelet 48 of hingedly interconnected lapping stones is connected to the tool mounting 38 in place of the tool 39 the lapping stones thereby being rotated and traversed along the shaft and pressed thereagainst under constant and equal pressure.
