Abstract

1,128,310. Finishing fabrics. SAMCOE HOLDING CORP. 16 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 51389/66. Heading D1S. In a method of converting tubular knitted fabric 16 to open width form, the fabric 16 is supplied in a form having initially discernible edge creases and, prior to slitting, is steamed to substantially remove these edge creases. The fabric 16 passes from a container, in which it is held in folded or roll form, over guide rollers and is directed over an edge relocating frame 19 to relocate the discernible creases at the fabric edges along the centre line of the reoriented tube. The frame 19 may be as described in Specification 1128309 and comprises three mutually perpendicular sections 21, 22, 23 and pairs of small diameter guide rolls 24, 25. The reoriented fabric 26 then passes over an internal spreader 27 as described in U.S.A. Specification No. 2.228,001 which exerts widthwise tension on the ridges formed by the initial edge creases. While the fabric is passing over the spreader 27 it is steamed by conventional steam boxes 28, 29. One layer of the flattened tube is then slit along its longitudinal centreline by a rotating knife 30. The slit fabric is directed between driven rollers 34, 35 which are maintained in separated relation so as not to apply nipping or creasing pressure to the fabric but are provided with surface coverings to exert a tractive gripping force on the layers of the fabric. The slit fabric edges are directed outwardly and around a side portion 36 of a frame 37 and under a roller 38. The open-width fabric is wound in a roll 39 supported on rollers 40.
