Abstract

1,126,743. Preparation of solid rubbery polymers. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 18 Feb., 1966 [4 March, 1965], No. 9195/65. Addition to 1,090,975. Headings C3P and C3Q. A solid rubbery polymeric composition is prepared from a feedstock containing a rubbery polymeric material in solution in an organic liquid by subdividing the feedstock into droplets and mixing the droplets with steam in conditions in which the steam condenses on the droplets and all the organic liquid is volatilized from each droplet while that droplet is free of external contact with a solid or bulk liquid, collecting the remaining portions of the droplets and separating the solid polymeric composition from water. The polymeric material may be a natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. a rubbery styrene-butadiene copolymer or a mixture thereof with butadiene rubber. The usual compounding ingredients may be present. The droplets may be passed into one or more jets of steam, preferably superheated and preferably moving in a direction at right-angles to the direction of motion of the droplets. The feedstock may be formed into a spray of droplets, e.g. by centrifugal atomization being supplied to the surface of a disc or inverted cup spinning at high speed to sub-divide the feedstock. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
