Abstract

1,125,170. Organopolysiloxanes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 7 Oct., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 45018/66. Heading C3T. In a conventional method of forming a film having a toughness value above 100,000, the material composing the film is made by condensing in the presence of stannous octoate a resinous copolymer composed of R 3 SiO 0 . 5 and SiO 2 units in a ratio of from 0À77: 1 to 1:1 respectively, and a siloxane of the formula HO(R<SP>11</SP> 2 SiO) n H, wherein R and R<SP>11</SP> are each a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and n is at least 2500, there being from 1 to 6 pts. by wt. of the hydroxyl-terminated siloxane per pt. of the copolymer. In a typical Example (1) the copolymer and hydroxy-terminated siloxane were blended together in toluene, stannous octoate added, and the resulting blend was cast on to a tin sheet and cured at 65‹ C.; a strip cut from the film had a toughness value of 760,000. Preparations of the copolymer are also described. (Toughness value = 0À5 x tensile strength x elongation.) Uses.-For making moulds, surgical gloves and for encapsulating artificial body members, e.g. artificial hearts.
