Abstract
A terpolymer comprises from 30 to 85 weight per cent of ethylene, from 10 to 40 weight per cent of an olefinically unsaturated C3-C5 alipathic ester of a monocarboxylic acid and from 5 to 30 weight per cent of an ester of an ethylene-dicarboxylic acid and a C1-C24 monohydric alcohol, said terpolymer having a molecular weight in the range of from 1000 to 4000. Hydrocarbon compositions may comprise a major proportion by weight of a petroleum distillate fuel boiling within the range between 250 DEG and 750 DEG F. and a minor proportion by weight of oil-soluble terpolymer. The terpolymer may be prepared by polymerizing the monomers in a hydrocarbon solvent at pressures of from 500 to 1500 p.s.i. and temperature of from 250 DEG to 350 DEG F., using a peroxide catalyst for 3 to 24 hours. Suitable esters of an ethylene-dicarboxylic acid are C4-C18 dialkyl fumarates and C13 oxo fumarates. In the example were used vinyl acetate, dilauryl fumarate, ditert butyl peroxide and benzene.ALSO:Hydrocarbon compositions comprise a major proportion by weight of a petroleum distillate fuel boiling within the range between 250 DEG and 750 DEG F. and a minor proportion by weight of an oil-soluble terpolymer pour point depressant comprising from 30 to 85 weight per cent of ethylene, from 10 to 40 weight per cent of an olefinically unsaturated C3-C5 aliphatic ester of a monocarboxylic acid and from 5 to 30 weight per cent of an ester of an ethylenedicarboxylic acid and a C1-C24 monohydric alcohol, said terpolymer having a molecular weight in the range of from 1000 to 4000. Preferably, the terpolymer is used in a concentration of from 0.001 to 0.09% by weight. In the example, an ethylene/vinyl acetate/dilauryl fumarate terpolymer is used in a middle distillate gas oil.
