Abstract

1,123,540. Tufting machines. SINGER CO. 1 Aug., 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 35265/67. Heading DIG. A tufting machine is provided with yarn feed means comprising a plurality of feed rollers rotated at different speeds, a plurality of individually movable yarn support mechanisms, each yarn strand being operably engageable with each feed roller, by a yarn support mechanism disposed adjacent thereto, for feed at a spaced determined by the speed of the roller, a separate actuator mechanism for each yarn supply mechanism to move the latter relative to its associated roller, and control means for effecting selective movements of the actuator mechanisms to produce tuft lengths in accordance with a predetermined pattern. As shown, yarn feed rollers 56, 58, 60 rotate at different speeds. A strand of yarn, e.g. 40a, passes in succession over support rollers 86, 88, 90 positioned adjacent the rollers 56, 58, 60 respectively. Each support roller is journalled at one end of a lever 92 pivoted intermediately on a fixed spindle 94. The other end of lever 92 is connected by a link 96 a lever 98 which is journalled intermediately on a fixed spindle 100 and is connected by a link 102 to the armature 104 of a solenoid 108. Every yarn strand passes over support rollers 86, 88, 90, connected similarly to respective solenoids 108. Energisation of a solenoid causes the coupled support roller to engage the associated yarn with the associated feed roller. Every yarn may therefore be fed at any one of three speeds. Energisation of the solenoids is controlled by illuminated pattern drum means 110, 112 co-operating with respective photo-cell means 114, 116. Drum 110 controls high and low tufts and drum 112 controls high and medium tufts.
