Abstract

1,123,401. Nestable plastics containers. MONSANTO CO. 25 Aug., 1965 [26 Aug., 1964], No. 36514/65. Addition to 1,063,811. Heading A4A. [Also in Division B8] In a nestable plastics container such as a drinking cup suitable for vending machines and having a bottom wall 2 and a side wall S tapering upwardly and outwardly to an open upper end, a part 14 of the outer surface of the skirt 1 of the side wall is foamed, e.g. by the method set out in Specification 1,063,811, an annular stacking shoulder 7 is formed in the side wall spaced downwardly from the open upper end, an annular supporting shoulder 5 is formed in the side wall spaced downwardly from the stacking shoulder, the supporting shoulder of one cup resting on the stacking shoulder of a like cup in which it is nested so that the foamed outer wall part is spaced from the unfoamed inner wall to prevent wedging of the nested cups. The bottom wall is formed as a double-conical base having a foamed inner part 4 which is at a greater angle to the plane passing through the bottom edge of the side wall than the outer part. The maximum thickness of the unfoamed part of the side wall is .010 inches and of the foamed part .022 inches the container being dimensioned so that the foamed part lies within a line joining the rim 30 and the bottom edge of the side wall so that the foamed part of the side wall does not contact the wall of a feed shoot of a vending machine and free fall is not inhibited. In a modification for use in vending machines in which the feed shoot is not vertical or is curved the co-operating stacking and supporting shoulders have a greater area of contact to more securely hold the cups against relative movement which would bring the foamed parts into contact with the inner surface of a lower cup in a stack or with the wall of the feed shoot.
